The Bemidji City Council last night took the first formal step towards regulating the license and sale of electronic cigarettes.

Discussion of the proposed ordinance showed there was little agreement on how the city should move forward with new regulations for the devices. During the discussion, city council member Reed Olson said that the language of the proposed ordinance was “draconian,” pointing out that it could be interpreted to make carrying electronic cigarettes in the city illegal. City Manager John Chattin agreed.

The council agreed that language in the ordinance, which changes the city's existing tobacco regulations, would need to be altered. The new ordinance is set for a public hearing at the next council meeting on November 4.
